| | sheesh! i'm so behind the times on this darn blog. eeks! heehee...after closing escrow on the house, i was a bridesmaid the week after, then we got married the week after that, and then we went on our honeymoon right after that. heehee...
i feel like i'm behind on everything! i'm not staying all organized. heehee...we have so many things to do in terms of our house, finishing up our wedding stuff, etc. i was so happy to have a nice get-away weekend to SD.
irv's friends (about 14 of us total) headed down to SD for some kayaking around la jolla shores/caves of la jolla. before and after the kayaking, we basically ate our way through SD. heehee...SD is a great place to live. i loved living there when i went to UCSD. we ate at some of our old haunts, such as el coti, the original place that turned me into a huge carne asada burrito fan! it was just as good as i had remembered...yum. of course, we had to indulge in extraordinary desserts, since that's turned into a "must-go" every time we're in SD. then of course, my fav breakfast place, original pancake house on convoy, for our meal before kayaking. sheesh. i'm stuffed just thinking about our trip this past weekend and i haven't listed everything out yet. heehee...
anyways, onto the purpose of our trip, which was kayaking, but ended up being just a nice side activity to our eating, sleeping and shopping. heehee...ocean kayaking was TOUGH. the wind was blowing pretty hard, so the water was pretty choppy. just getting out from shore was tough, since the waves kept breaking and pushing us back towards the beach. my arms started burning about 10 min into the water?? heehee...our tour guides made it look super easy, gliding through the water. but for some reason, none of us could emulate that! we were all huffing and puffing our way along...those kayaks also weren't quite that easy to control, since the waves were breaking against the caves, so we were supposed to get close to the caves, but not too close. i kept hoping for some nice calm patch of water, where we didn't have to vigilantly paddle or turn the kayak, but no such luck.
silly me, figured we'd get a little wet, and that's about it. let me tell you, i was basically soaked in the first 2 minutes, since i sat in front, and the waves kept breaking over the tiny bow of the kayak while we tried to paddle ourselves out to the ocean. thank goodness for the dry sack eugene and joanne lent us!!! we stashed car keys, wallets, cash, our new tiny video camera, etc in there...the dry sack was soaked on the outside, so i was worried about our stuff on the inside. the sack kept it nice and dry to my immense relief. i would have been bummed if our new camera was ruined!
we were out on the ocean for about 90 minutes, and then headed back in...i think we got some good pictures on our disposable underwater camera. i guess we'll see? oh, did i mention we all wore life vests and helmets? heehee...the helmets were to protect us since we did the cave tour, though technically, we weren't allowed to enter any of the caves except for 1. and for that cave, irv and i passed on going into it, since the water was supposedly more choppy in there, so we were instructed to swim our way out if we flipped over, and the tour guides would get our kayaks out for us. since irv can't swim, there was no way i wanted to go into the cave. i think only 3 of the 7 double-person kayaks went in. the rest of us waited briefly while they made the small loop inside.
after the ocean water, we decided it might be refreshing to jump into the hotel pool, so that's what we did. we hung out at the hotel pool for awhile, until we had to get showered for dinner. times like that, i wish we had a pool! heehee...
all in all? eating: delicious food at el coti, extraordinary desserts, orig pancake house, C-level, george's ocean terrace hotel: hilton mission valley was decent. rooms were clean, newly remodeled, but the beds & pillows were a bit too squishy for my preference. convenient location, and pretty much central to everything we did. kayaking: la jolla kayak was a good tour guide. tough activity, esp for those out of shape, like me! choppy waters induced a bit of lightheadedness in those who get motion sickness... shopping: carlsbad outlets had plenty of things on sale, so almost all of us left with something, if not more than 1 something. heehee...didn't hit up mission valley or fashion valley even though we were less than 5 min away. i guess we were too busy eating or sleeping? heehee...
we had a great time! it felt like a nice long relaxing weekend, even though we were only there friday night through sunday afternoon.
next up? 4th of july long weekend! it's time for a bbq!
